Scripture Notes

2006-01-27 - I am beginning a study on the Word of God, in preparation for the OGV project and for future studies. After all, a proper understanding of the nature and purpose of God's revelation is a necessary component of Bible translation and any study of His word.

I have a lot of Scripture-related Notes, that is, notes from Sermons, from Bible Study, from work, etc. that I am trying to collect into some coherent whole. When I am able to do so, I will begin placing portions of them here. Those already uploaded are, unfortunately, in a very rough state.

Today (2005-1-12) I have had a rather rude awakening. I had been thinking (largely because I had never heard it before) that I had thought up a rather good explanation for God's acceptance of Cain's sacrifice (the natural one). However, I checked that passage in my friend's condensed Matthew Henry Commentary, and it had that explanation (which no one else I know of has ever mentioned to me) and TWO more very reasonable explanations. And, while this is perhaps the first time I have even picked up Matthew Henry's Commentary, I must say it is the best I have read yet, and I have read quite a few (though most were a bit skewed toward the study of the original language and culture, rather than the true spiritual meaning of the passage. Mr. Henry doesn't mention one thing that I thought was blatantly obvious, but he brings out about ten things I never fathomed instead. To cut the story short, if you are looking for a good commentary, skip all the modern ones, and go for Matthew Henry's Commentary, at least for starters, and be sure to pray about what he says.

The rude awakening, which I didn't explain, was the realization of how proud I was getting about all my "discoveries" in Genesis and such. The making of this website is something of a pride issue, flaunting my knowledge (or what I think is my knowledge) to the world. So, having realized this, what do I do about it? Good question.
